Signal Hill Mall owners and managers have been totally awesome in meeting so many of our needs.  Iredell-Statesville Schools have been so gracious  to help us with so many things.  This event wil be an event of a lifetime for this community.  If you’re interested in performing or volunteering, just call United Way at 704-872-3000.Decisions, Decisions

Good Grief! Just 8 Days ’til Statesville’s 10-Day Music Marathon

March 12, 2009

We are ROCKIN’ & ROLLIN’ Statesville & Iredell County!  Just 8 days in the countdown until our Guinness World Record 10-Day Music Marathon starts and our committee is PUMPED!  We had a terrific meeting this afternoon with a live performance from Cindy Floyd…over 700 performers booked…we still have slots to fill…especially midnight to 8:00 a.m.  Remember, the music cannot stop so we need to fill in all the gaps.  Interested?  Call 704-872-3000 or register at www.unitedwayofiredell.org

All musicians are welcome with family appropriate music and lyrics.  One heck of a celebration of our local talent as well as out-of-town and out-of-state talent coming in.  Country, Classic Rock ‘n Roll, Contemporary Christian, Gospel, Jazz, Bluegrass, Blues, Hip Hop, Violin, Church Choirs, ElderCenter’s Snappy Senior Singers, family bands, youth, school bands and choruses, you name it!

It’s wonderful that the owners of the mall are providing the venue for us…inside so we don’t have to be concerned about the weather.

We still need volunteers to serve as greeters, verifiers and at our registration desk.  Volunteer for a 4-hr. slot at www.unitedwayofiredell.org or call 704-872-3000 with any questions you may have.

I want to tell you how proud I am of our United Way staff who have maintained a high level of enthusiasm and fought off frustrations in managing this event.  Chris Bumgarner, our volunteer organizer, has been just awesome in his leadership and  hard work to make certain breaking this record becomes a reality for our community.  And, of course, he wants to provide a source of funds for the 23 local United Way agencies.

Stay tuned as we count down the days!

What has 1,500 legs, has high energy and just makes you feel good?

February 20, 2009

Here we are one month from the start date of this Music Marathon and our World Record Committee is getting so pumped!  Today we got our 1st Blues performer registered.  I can’t wait to hear Blazin Blues Bob from Salisbury.

The main focus of our committee right now is to recruit the 360 volunteers we will need…we’re currently close to the 50% mark there.  We wnat YOU to be invovled in achieving this Guinness World Record for our community.

What kind of volunteer jobs are there?  In each four hour segment of the concert, we will need:

  • a Concierge or greeter
  • a Manager which our committee will mainly cover
  • Verifier #1 to comfortably sit, watch the clock, enjoy the music and fill out an affidavit to verify the flow of music
  • Verifier #2 do the same as above
  • Security Signal Hill Mall is covering most of this but we need volunteers for the wee hours

Who Can Volunteer?  Since the 10-Day Music Marathon is a 24 hour event, anyone over 18 who attends a training can volunteer.  Retirees are especially welcome, newcomers to Statesville and Iredell County, shift workers who can work on their “off” times, housewives while the kids are in school, etc.

How Do I Sign-up To Volunteer?  Visit our website on-line at www.unitedwayofiredell.org and click on the Music Marathon graphic in the upper right corner and you will find an on-line registration form for volunteers.  You can also come by, call or email the United Way office.

So, what has 1,500 legs, lots of energy and makes you feel good?

All the performers at Statesville’s 10-Day Music Marathon!

Wow! Performers are registering everyday!

February 16, 2009

I love the variety of performers that are registering…thus far, we have country, rock, pop & classics, Irish/Celtic, school concert bands and choruses, family groups, etc.  The majority so far are locals within Iredell County but we also have performers from Lexington, KY, Raleigh, Greensboro, Charlotte, Davidson, Lenoir and Huntersville. We also have an unconfirmed performer from Nashville!

Many folks are sharing their excitement with us.  Most comments are about the cool nature of our community going for breaking a rather significant Guinness World Record.  Others are happy that this is something our entire community can enjoy and benefit from during these tough economic times. Let us hear your thoughts! and remember…

February 13, 2009

Today, we have 52 performing groups registered and within those groups 200+ performers.  We are on our way.  Chris Bumgarner, a young Statesville businessman, and publisher of Statesville Progress, is the event organizer and has unlimited energy and a very progressive, can-do attitude.

Such a great group of volunteers working on this event…many thanks to Janet Harriman for creation of the concert website…access it via our organizational website, www.unitedwayofiredell.org for more info.  It’s going to ROCK!!!

Hello world!

February 12, 2009

Be a part of history!  Statesville, NC is going to be the first community in the United States to hold the Guinness World Record for the Longest Continuous Music Concert in history!   We’re talking 24 hours a day for TEN DAYS!  No, we are NOT CRAZY but we ARE FEARLESS!  Starting on Thursday, March 19th and running through Sunday, March 29th, musicians of all genres…country, classical, pop, bluegrass, jazz, harp, piano, violin, gospel, rock, contemporary Christian…you name it!

Why are we going to break the Guinness World Record?  We have several objectives:

  • We want to showcase the rich talent here in Iredell County and in other communities across our country.  The unemployment rate in Iredell County has doubled in the last year and we have many, many families out of work and struggling to stay afloat.  We ALL need nurturing and this is just what the doctor ordered!  There will be no admission fee, donations only, so that anyone and everyone regardless of ability to pay will be able to attend, enjoy and have their spirits lifted!
  • This will be a true community-wide event with all sectors of our community participating, performing, and supporting. ..young and older.   We are one people and together we can make a difference in struggling lives.
  • United Way of Iredell County is still over $300,000 short of our goal for funding 23 local agencies in 2009.  We have a fundraising component to this event and all proceeds will go to help strengthen our community and provide assitance where needed.

Check out our website at www.unitedwayofiredell.org to learn more or to register to perform and/or volunteer.  Stay tuned to learn more about Statesville’s Music Marathon…musicfeedsfamilies!
